Building creativity together: The Girls & Boys Brigade

We believe every young person deserves the chance to explore their creativity. That’s why we’re so proud of our growing relationship with The Girls & Boys Brigade, an organisation that’s been supporting young people in Sydney for over 140 years.

The Girls & Boys Brigade provides after-school care, holiday programs and family support for children and young people aged 5 to 18 in inner-city Sydney. Their focus is on creating a safe and supportive environment, a place where young people can learn, grow and be themselves.

Over the past two years, we’ve been running free drama workshops with the Brigade, bringing theatre-making skills and storytelling into their after-school and holiday programs. Whether it’s devising scenes, experimenting with puppetry or simply playing a big drama game to get the energy flowing, the workshops offer space for young people to express themselves freely and try something new.

We also invite the Brigade to join us at the theatre, offering free tickets to Monkey Baa performances. For many of the young people, it’s their first time seeing a live show, and the experience can be powerful.

And the relationship doesn’t stop with the young people. This year, we’re working with The Girls & Boys Brigade team to co-develop professional development opportunities, so that youth workers can bring even more arts-based approaches into their work. That means more creativity, more storytelling and more opportunities for young people to shine.

At its heart, this partnership is about shared values, and we’re excited to keep growing it together.
