A magically inventive story about two sisters and the illness that comes between them.
A deliciously dark new comedy from Miranda Middleton and Ziggy Resnick.
After its world-premiere production in Melbourne, ‘Pear-Shaped’ makes its Sydney debut in a slightly new shape and size. Featuring some original design elements and sound design, a new draft of the play will be staged as an in-progress reading at ARA Darling Quarter Theatre as part of the Monkey Baa Studio program.
Young designer Frankie is working on their latest project - a brand new adaptation of one their favourite childhood stories, Alice in Wonderland. The pressure is on to deliver something entirely new, but a surprise visit from their sister will send Frankie tumbling down a rabbit hole of memories they’d rather forget.
Adapting elements of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale in an entirely original and imaginative way, this deliciously dark new comedy explores what happens when food, a symbol of love, family and culture, becomes the enemy.
Never losing sight of the magic and messiness of sisterhood, ‘Pear-Shaped’ is about growing up, growing down, and everything in between.
Monkey Baa Studio presents a Rogue Projects production, directed by Miranda Middleton.
Please note that Pear-Shaped contains references to disordered eating, mental health and body image.
The show includes coarse language.
"Wholly inventive and deliciously absurd, this story about sisterhood, eating disorders and the creative process packs a punch."
"This production would be at home in any professional main stage theatre in Australia… Miranda Middleton and Ziggy Resnick have masterfully interwoven Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland with an age-old human story."
What Did She Think
"Pear-Shaped is ingeniously designed and conceived indie theatre which ventures down the rabbit hole… and rather brilliantly adapts dialogue and characters from Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland."
