Where is the Green Sheep? Central West Queensland Slow Tour 2027

Monkey Baa Theatre Company, in partnership with Queensland Performing Arts Centre and the Western Touring Circuit, will bring the beloved stage adaptation of Where is the Green Sheep? to regional and remote Queensland in 2027 through an ambitious five week Slow Tour designed to deepen community connection and expand access to live theatre for young children.

Based on the iconic book by Mem Fox and Judy Horacek, and adapted for the stage by Eva Di Cesare, Where is the Green Sheep? blends puppetry, animation, live performance, music and sound design to create an immersive theatre experience for children aged one to six and their families.

The Where is the Green Sheep? Central West Queensland Slow Tour will deliver five weeks of place based touring across regional and remote Queensland in April and May 2027, with performances in 5 hub locations and workshops in 14 surrounding communities.

The program brings together touring practice and place based approaches to explore how professional theatre can be embedded within the communities where children live. Rather than offering short visits, Monkey Baa will work within each region over time, beginning with a research tour in May 2026 to engage with local councils, educators, families and service providers.

Town halls and community spaces will be converted to present a professionally produced theatre work, complete with staging, lighting, sound and touring theatre staff. Artists will also engage with surrounding communities through a hub and spoke model shaped by local context. This approach responds to the balance between reach and depth, while documenting, evaluating and refining how theatre can connect with local systems and community needs.

We are excited to collaborate with Outback Futures, who play a key role in connecting creativity with care in Central West Queensland. Outback Futures delivers place-based mental health, speech and occupational therapy services across remote communities where access is limited. Aligned with the Where is the Green Sheep? Slow Tour, the partnership brings artists and allied health practitioners into the same communities at the same time, supporting children’s emotional development, communication and connection through creative experiences and trusted local care.

Monkey Baa acknowledges the vital support of our partners, including Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Western Touring Circuit, Arts on Tour, Outback Futures and Opera Queensland. The tour is supported by Creative Australia, the Robertson Foundation, the John Villiers Trust, the Darin Cooper Foundation and Monkey Baa’s Grandparents Donor Circle.

Western Touring Circuit is supported by local councils and Arts Queensland through the Regional Arts Development Fund.

The tour will visit the following hubs and surrounding communities:

Week commencing 12 April: Roma, with workshops in Mitchell, Morven and Augathella

Week commencing 19 April: Cunnamulla, with workshops in Thargomindah, Quilpie and Eulo and Charleville

About the show

Where is the Green Sheep? is an immersive visual theatre experience based on the beloved children’s book by Mem Fox and Judy Horacek. We meet Blue Sheep who loves blue flowers and Red Sheep who loves to cartwheel in the fields, Bath Sheep who loves bubbles and Bed Sheep who loves to bounce... But where IS that Green Sheep?

Blending puppetry and animation, this beautiful production invites young audiences to join our three farmers on their quest to find the elusive green sheep. Co-created with students from Bankstown West Public School, this production integrates their voices as narrators, ensuring the work resonates deeply with young audiences.

Where is the Green Sheep? is a co-production with QPAC’s Out of the Box in association with Arts Centre Melbourne, The Sydney Opera House and The Art House, Wyong.
