The future is bright for Monkey Baa and theatre for young people

Dear Monkey Baa Supporter,

Today, the Monkey Baa Board and Executive team are announcing our 3-year growth plan that supports the next phase of our company’s development. For over 26 years, Monkey Baa has played a critical role in empowering over 1.6 million young Australians through transformative theatre.

This announcement responds to the ever-changing requirements of our audience, the rebuilding process after COVID, and trends within the theatre and arts sectors. This recalibration will allow us to navigate an evolving cultural environment, with an exciting plan for the future.

Monkey Baa will implement several planned shifts over the next 18 months that build the artistic focus, innovation and stability of the company. The changes will strengthen our capacity to reach a wider and more diverse audience across Australia.

The core tenets of the plan include:

  • Focusing our main priority as a creator and producer of theatre for young people.

  • Establishing new national partnerships that will expand the presence of our productions to more theatres in cities and regional towns. Enabling more young people the opportunity to engage with our work regardless of where they live.

  • Consolidating the medium-term financial viability and ultimate sustainability of the company.

As part of this plan, we will conclude our long-term lease in our current home at the ARA Darling Quarter Theatre in Sydney (mid-2024). The theatre has served the company well for over a decade and we extend our sincere thanks to our foundation partner, Lendlease. Whose support has been invaluable over that time.

Monkey Baa is committed to building on our reputation and creative success to expand our reach and maintain our relevance. As we evolve, we will continue to present and tour our performances at theatres all across Australia. Starting in 2024, we will be embarking on an intense period of creative development of new work.

We look forward to implementing our plans and updating you on our progress over the coming months. At this time, we want to thank our wonderful community, our donors and patrons for your ongoing support. Particularly our key partners and funders including the ARA Group, NSW Government, Australia Council and City of Sydney.

Thank you for supporting us in achieving our big dreams, now and into the future.

Warm regards,
