message about covid-19

March 24th, 2020

We had dearly hoped there would be a different outcome, but in-line with government advice all Monkey Baa and ARA Darling Quarter Theatre activity has been paused for now and our core team will be working off-site.

what does this mean? First and foremost, we will be postponing the April premiere of Edward the Emu in Darling Harbour. Our Education and General Public seasons (April 6-24) will be rescheduled for later in the year when our ‘new normal’ is underway. If you are a ticket holder to our April school holidays season we’ll be in touch via email over the next couple of days with re-ticketing options. As directives emerge over the next month we will have a clearer idea of the impacts on our 2020 National Tour. At this point in time it is impossible to predict how this will unfold but we will be working with our partners and venues across the country to support them and ensure Edward and Edwina will be seen by their communities in the near future.

This also means no Monkey Play or venue hire events until further notice.

Currently, other productions in our 2020 Season scheduled for the latter part of the year are currently proceeding as planned so there is no need to make any changes just yet.

And additionally, you may have read on our Facebook page that last weekend we made the heartbreaking decision to cancel the US tour of Diary of a Wombat and bring our team home. Years of planning, months of preparation and the livelihoods of another branch of the Monkey Baa family ended abruptly. Mothball and her humans are all now in 14-day lockdown as they do their part in community containment efforts.

COVID-19 is having an unprecedented impact upon the Arts, with vast, long-term cultural and economic impacts. Under normal circumstances, 90% of our small theatre company’s operational and creative development funding comes from box office and philanthropic contributors. As a friend of Monkey Baa, if it is within your means, now more than ever we’d love your support and tax-deductible donations can be made here.

This really is a rollercoaster… one we’ve never ridden before. We are on this with our fellow Arts enterprises, independent artists, creatives, crews and freelance workers and share in the collective trepidation as we ride this out together.

Love at this crazy time from the Monkeys x
